A woman has accused her husband of domestic violence, neglect and having sex with her by force, saying the marriage lacked love and affection.
The woman, a prophetess named Idowu has therefore, asked a Grade A Customary Court, sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve the marriage to her husband, Aaron.
She accused Aaron of regular physical abuse, marital rape, and threatening her life with a knife.
Idowu also claimed that Aaron neglected her and their four children and failed as a provider, thus leaving her and their children to face regular starvation.
Idowu stated that she solely funded their children’s WASSCE and JAMB examination for their eldest twins, which they passed in flying colours.
According to Idowu, Aaron refused to pay for their subsequent higher education.
Fearing for her safety, Idowu stated that she moved out with their four children (two sets of twins).
She explained that Aaron has provided zero financial support since her departure.
The plaintiff thus sought from the court, full custody of their four children, a court order forcing Aaron to pay child upkeep, and a restraining order to protect her privacy and safety.
Aaron consented to divorce but demanded custody of their first set of twins.
He initially denied paternity to the younger set of twins, claiming Idowu once told him during an argument that he was not their father.
Aaron also accused Idowu of poor parenting, citing an incident where one of the younger twins was caught stealing at school and which brought shame to the family.
He offered a monthly feeding allowance of ₦50,000 for the children.
Idowu, in her testimony, said, “I walked out of my marriage when it was obvious my husband would one day make real his threat to kill me.
“I am in court today to put an end to our relationship. My husband is inhumane. He never showed me love nor showered affection on me.
“All he knew to do was to raise an argument, fight, and beat me. My husband was in the habit of drawing a knife at me whenever we fought and would threaten to kill me. He also used to have sex with me with force, thus humiliating me.
“He neglected me and our children and was insensitive to our needs. He starved us on a daily basis. My husband likewise was indifferent to our children’s education.
I singlehandedly bore the responsibility of our children’s education. I funded their WASSCE and JAMB examination, which they passed in flying colours.
They have been given admission into the higher institution, but he has still refused to make any contributions towards the payment of their tuition fees. He has made zero contribution towards our children’s upkeep since I left home.
“I pray that the court grants me our children’s custody while it makes my husband responsible for their upkeep. I further request an order restraining him from threatening and infringing on my privacy.”
Responding, the husband, Aaron said: “I am also no longer interested in our union. I agree to divorce but refuse that my wife has custody of our first set of twins.
“She once told me during an argument that our second set of twins is not mine. She has refused to handle our children with a firm hand, and this led to one of them stealing in school and soiling the family’s image.
“I am ready to give our children N50, 000 per month as a feeding allowance. My wife has constantly denied access to our children and has poisoned their minds against me. I request that they pay me visits at weekends twice in a week,” TRIBUNE ONLINE quoted the husband as saying.
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, after she had heard both parties adjourned the case until August 2 for judgment.
