The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old woman, Nwachukwu Blessing, over an alleged self-kidnapping scheme in which her family reportedly paid N3m as ransom.
The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following intelligence gathered during an investigation into the reported abduction.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
According to Ikenga, Blessing was allegedly abducted along the Onitsha-Asaba Expressway on August 29, 2026.
He said the family paid N3m to secure her release, but the woman was allegedly not freed, prompting the police to intensify their investigation.
Ikenga said sustained intelligence gathering eventually led police operatives to a room in Asaba, Delta State, where the alleged victim was found on the afternoon of September 18.
He said preliminary findings indicated that Blessing may have worked with a female associate identified as Onyinye and another male accomplice whose identity was yet to be established.
The police spokesman said the suspects allegedly staged the abduction to obtain money from Blessing’s family.
He stated, “The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following credible intelligence received in the course of an investigation into a reported kidnapping incident.
“The lady was reportedly abducted along the Onitsha-Asaba Expressway on 29th August 2026. However, despite the payment of N3 million ransom by her family, she was allegedly not released, prompting further investigation by the police.
“Following sustained intelligence gathering and investigative efforts, Police Operatives, in the afternoon of September 18, 2026, traced and located the alleged victim in a room in Asaba, Delta State, where she was recovered.”
Ikenga added that the investigation was ongoing, with the arrested woman assisting the police with information that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and identify her suspected accomplices.
