Nigerian TikTok personality Hamzat Habeeb, popularly known as Peller, expressed surprise after a marriage registrar warned him and his wife, Jarvis, about the legal consequences of violating their marriage vows during their court wedding ceremony.
Peller and Jarvis, who are preparing for their white wedding this weekend, officially legalised their union on Wednesday in a civil ceremony attended by family, friends and media personality Daddy Freeze.
While addressing the couple during the ceremony, the registrar reminded them that entering another marriage while legally married amounts to bigamy, which is a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
“In a competent court of jurisdiction, if any of you goes against the rules, he or she is guilty of an offence called bigamy. And it’s a punishable offence of a minimum of 5 years imprisonment with no option of fine. Any bed? Should I proceed, or do you want to go and rethink?” the registrar said.
Prompt News reports the warning left Peller visibly stunned, prompting him to question why imprisonment was being mentioned during what he considered a celebration of love.
