The National Caretaker Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has insisted that the party’s 2026 national convention will proceed as scheduled, dismissing concerns over legal challenges and internal disagreements.
The convention is widely seen as a critical test of legitimacy and cohesion within the party, amid factional tensions and competing claims that could influence its prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, the NCWC spokesperson, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, said preparations for the exercise had been concluded, stressing that the event would go on without disruption.
He described the convention as a significant milestone for the party, noting that it underscores its commitment to democratic principles, due process, and the will of its members.
Mohammed assured party stakeholders and the public that all arrangements had been finalised in accordance with the party’s constitution and relevant laws, adding that the process would be transparent, inclusive, and credible.
Dismissing speculations about possible court intervention, he stated that the party had not received any legal notice to halt the exercise.
According to him, the convention slated for March 29 would proceed as planned, expressing confidence that nothing would stand in its way.
The committee also distanced its process from that of a rival faction reportedly backed by Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, insisting that its own convention is firmly grounded in law and enjoys judicial backing.
While acknowledging the existence of internal differences, the party downplayed the divisions, describing them as normal in any political organisation and maintaining that it commands widespread support within its ranks.
Mohammed added that although the party remained open to reconciliation, it would not delay its activities on account of dissenting voices.
He also refuted allegations of lack of transparency in the nomination process, stating that adequate publicity had been given to the sale of forms.
The spokesperson further commended Wike for what he described as his support in providing a conducive environment for the convention.
