Victims of the brutal attack in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State have recounted their terrifying ordeal after suspected armed herdsmen raided four communities, leaving a trail of devastation.
The affected communities—Aba Pastor, Aba Sunday, Ademekun Camp, and Aba Alajido Camp in Ala Elefosan—were attacked in the dead of night, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people. Survivors said the assailants, heavily armed, struck without warning, leaving many injured and forcing residents to flee into the surrounding forests.
Among those recovering from gunshot wounds are siblings John and Solomon Simon, who were attacked at Sunday Camp. Speaking from their hospital beds, they described the terrifying events.
John, who was shot in the hand, said, “I was asleep when gunshots woke me up. The person beside me had already been hit. As I tried to escape, I was shot in the hand, but I managed to flee into the bush and hid in a cocoa plantation until morning. When I returned, I saw nine people dead in our camp.”
He insisted that the attackers were herdsmen, saying, “I have lived in Sunday Camp for four years, and we have never harmed their cattle. We don’t understand why they did this.”
Solomon, his brother, recounted: “The attack happened around 2 a.m. I heard a loud call, and suddenly, they opened fire everywhere. I ran before they could reach my house, but two of my friends were killed inside.”
In response, Ondo State Police Commissioner, Wilfred Afolabi, visited the crime scene and met with survivors.
Prompt News reports that he has also ordered the command’s homicide unit to investigate the attack.
