The Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, has thrown his weight behind the expansion of financial technology across the Southeast, describing it as a critical driver of economic growth, youth empowerment and regional competitiveness.
Achebe made the remarks while receiving the Chief Executive Officer of Flutterwave, Olugbenga Agboola, popularly known as GB, during a high-level engagement that spotlighted the role of digital innovation in transforming traditional commerce.
In a symbolic gesture, the monarch adopted the fintech entrepreneur as a son, underscoring the significance of his achievements and the growing relevance of technology leaders in shaping Nigeria’s economic future.
Speaking during the meeting, Achebe said the Southeast’s deep-rooted culture of trade and enterprise positions it advantageously to harness the benefits of financial technology, noting that the region’s long-standing commercial networks could be significantly enhanced through digital solutions.
He stressed that integrating modern fintech tools into the Igbo trading system would not only accelerate business operations but also improve access to financial services for traders across markets in the region.
Agboola, whose rise from local beginnings to leading one of Africa’s foremost fintech firms has drawn widespread recognition, was hailed as a testament to Nigeria’s capacity for innovation on the global stage.
Discussions at the meeting centred on strengthening collaboration between technology firms and grassroots traders, with particular emphasis on leveraging digital platforms to boost productivity and expand market reach.
The monarch highlighted the need to bridge the gap between traditional commerce and emerging technologies, noting that such synergy would unlock new economic opportunities and reinforce the Southeast’s position in an increasingly digital global economy.
Youth development also featured prominently, as Achebe called for the integration of technology training into existing community empowerment initiatives.
He said equipping young people with digital skills would enable them to create scalable businesses rather than rely solely on conventional employment.
He further reiterated the resilience and ingenuity of entrepreneurs in the region, noting that many have built successful ventures despite infrastructural challenges.
Referencing the Onitsha Main Market, one of West Africa’s largest trading hubs, the monarch said its vast commercial ecosystem presents a unique opportunity for digital transformation, particularly through the adoption of electronic payments and online trading platforms.
He disclosed that previous efforts to introduce structured technology training within the market had stalled but maintained that such initiatives remain vital to future growth.
Achebe also emphasised the importance of education and continuous learning in driving Africa’s development, urging sustained investment in skills acquisition and technological capacity.
As part of efforts to deepen engagement with the youth, the monarch invited Agboola to speak at Ahmadu Bello University, where he serves as Chancellor, during a major academic event slated for January.
He assured that the institution’s leadership would support the initiative, describing it as a platform to inspire the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.
