Rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has criticised Nigerians for the manner in which they engage in protests, alleging that many only participate when provided with transport fare, disc jockeys and refreshments.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Adeyanju drew a contrast between Nigerians and protesters in Nepal, whom he described as more committed to civic causes.
“Nigerians always need transport money, DJ and refreshment to protest. Look at your mates in Nepal,” he wrote.
His statement comes against the backdrop of mass demonstrations in Nepal which recently forced the country’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, to step down following outrage over the death of 22 citizens during clashes with security operatives.
Oli’s office announced on Tuesday that he resigned to allow a constitutional response to the protests, which had been sparked by allegations of corruption and the government’s controversial social media ban that was later revoked.
Thousands of young people, many carrying placards identifying themselves as Gen Z, poured into the streets of Kathmandu on Monday as the demonstrations intensified.
Protesters stormed parliament and other government buildings, while security agents responded with water cannons, tear gas and live bullets.
