Police authorities in Imo State have taken into custody a young man accused of assaulting a 15-year-old girl, even as officers fingered in alleged professional misconduct are being held for questioning.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Wisdom Onyeaju of Umuekweye, Irete in Owerri West Local Government Area, was apprehended after a widely circulated online video spotlighted the alleged crime.

The footage, uploaded on January 3 by the victim’s sister, alleged that the suspect broke into the girl’s home during the festive season, threatened her with a weapon, and assaulted her.

The clip sparked outrage after another claim surfaced accusing police operatives near Government House, Owerri, of demanding ₦100,000 from the family before taking the girl’s statement.

Police spokesman, DSP Okoye Henry, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, said Onyeaju is undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

“He will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the PPRO stated.

Henry added that the command has zeroed in on the officers allegedly involved in extortion and dereliction of duty.

“The personnel mentioned in the complaint have been detained.

An orderly room trial will commence on Monday, January 12, 2026, in accordance with police disciplinary procedures,” he said.

The command assured the public of its resolve to police the state professionally, stressing that accountability remains at the heart of its operations.
