Nollywood actor Lanre Afod has spoken about his near-death experiences, revealing that he suffered heart failure twice and believes excessive consumption of energy drinks contributed to his health problems.
Afod made the disclosure during a recent appearance on the Talk To B podcast, where he discussed the severity of his illness and recalled a warning he received from fellow actor Ricardo Agbor about his energy drink habit.
According to the actor, his condition brought him close to death on two occasions. He said the ordeal left a lasting impression on him and prompted him to become vocal about the potential dangers of consuming too many energy drinks.
“I faced death twice. I saw death like this. I’m telling you, I’m a survivor of heart failure. Some people sent me messages, some people called me. One of the people was Alwell Ademola,” he said.
Afod also recounted a distressing moment when a doctor told him that he was dying. He said the conversation overwhelmed him emotionally, especially as he struggled to come to terms with the possibility of losing his life.
“I remember one day, one of the doctors was talking to me, he said you’re dying, I burst into tears…we were discussing death like as if…the person next to me would say, ‘you’re still alive here, you woke up today?’ And I would answer: ‘Yes, I woke up’,” he said.
Reflecting on what he went through, the actor said he now actively speaks against excessive energy drink consumption, which he believes played a role in his illness.
“I am an advocate against energy drink. Energy drink contributed to my own Illness,” he said.
He further recalled that Agbor had questioned his habit before his health crisis, urging him to stop consuming so many energy drinks and warning him about possible heart complications.
“Ricardo Agbor walked in and he said, ‘Lanre, stop! Why are you consuming so many energy drinks?’ He told me it causes heart problems. It was like a month after when the issue began.”
Away from his health experience, Afod also highlighted his versatility in the entertainment industry, explaining that his work extends beyond acting to several creative fields.
