Nigeria Cannot Change Until Citizens Transform Their Mindset – Davido

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has voiced concerns over poor governance, injustice and the hardships facing Nigerians, saying the country urgently needs positive change.

The singer shared his views during an appearance on the I Wanna Talk podcast, where he reflected on the 2020 EndSARS protests and the hopes they initially raised for a better Nigeria.

Davido said he had believed the demonstrations would lead to meaningful changes but became disappointed when public attention appeared to shift shortly afterwards, with many Nigerians returning to their usual activities.

He also criticised what he described as a pattern in which individuals who campaign against poor leadership change their positions once they assume political power.

Recalling his reaction to the protests, he said, “I was happy to see Nigerians protest during EndSARS. I thought change was coming, but December came and people were partying. Even me, who was initially optimistic about the movement got discouraged. I was like we can’t kill ourselves. We have kids and people we are living for.

“Once the government is bad, there would be hardship. I can’t even advise people who are going through economic hardship because I am not going through what they are going through, even though I have my own struggles, too. What I can say is, Nigeria, fix up. The country has to change from politicians to citizens, everything.

“We can’t change our society until we change our mindset as a people. Today, the same people that were protesting are campaigning for politicians. Those who claim to fight for the people often change when they get power,” he stated.

Prompt News reports the singer stressed that Nigeria’s problems require changes from both political leaders and ordinary citizens, arguing that a shift in people’s attitudes and values is necessary for society to improve.

Despite coming from a privileged and influential background, Davido also admitted that he remains concerned about personal safety, highlighting the difficulties confronting Nigerians across different social classes.
