Motorists can now buy and dispense petrol themselves at selected Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited retail stations through a mobile application, following the introduction of a smart self service system by NNPC Retail.

The initiative is part of NNPC Retail’s plan to establish between 50 and 70 smart self service stations across the country within the next six months.

Under the new arrangement, motorists no longer have to rely entirely on pump attendants to dispense fuel. Customers can select the quantity or amount they want, pay through the designated application and obtain a code that activates the pump.

NNPC Retail, in a guide shared on its X account on Friday, explained the steps motorists must follow to use the new system.

Motorists are required to first download the NRL Fuel App before opening the application and selecting the “Fuel Purchase” option.

They will then choose their preferred fuel type and search through the list of participating NNPC Retail stations. Only stations offering the self service facility will be identified with a green “Self Serve” badge.

After selecting a participating station, the customer is expected to enter the amount to be spent on fuel. The application will display the corresponding quantity and price for review before the customer proceeds to make payment from the wallet.

Once the transaction is successful, the app generates a digital receipt containing the Order ID, an eight digit Self Service Code and a QR code.

At the fuel pump, the motorist enters the eight digit code on the terminal and presses the hash key. After the code is validated, the customer can pick up the nozzle and dispense the exact quantity of fuel purchased.

NNPC Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the initiative was part of the company’s broader plan to transform conventional filling stations into integrated energy and mobility hubs.

At the newly commissioned smart station on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, NNPC Retail Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba Kukawa, said motorists could complete their transactions on their phones and dispense the exact amount of fuel they had paid for.

The company said the smart stations would also offer other services, including electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas and other mobility solutions.
