Days of torrential rainfall have displaced the traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Alexander Uzo Onyido, Ezechuamagha of Ogidi, after floodwaters overwhelmed his palace.
The monarch was reportedly forced to leave the residence after rising floodwaters submerged the entire palace premises and several luxury vehicles parked within the compound.
The development followed days of intense rainfall across Anambra, which has disrupted movement and commercial activities in several communities.
Ogidi has continued to battle recurring flooding and erosion, with some residents in affected areas reportedly abandoning their homes because of the persistent threat.
A portion of the old Awka-Onitsha Road in the community has also remained largely impassable for years due to flooding, despite repeated assurances by the state government that the area would be rehabilitated.
Residents said the situation had continued to worsen during periods of heavy rainfall, with homes, businesses and roads affected by floodwaters.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo had visited the flood-prone area in 2025 during his campaign for re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
During the visit, the governor reportedly inspected the affected portion of the road and promised to address the problem.
However, residents said significant work had yet to commence on the affected section of the road, leaving the area vulnerable to further flooding.
A social media user, Iyke Orji, expressed disappointment over the continued flooding in Ogidi despite the attention the problem had received.
Orji also claimed that residents of the community raised N50m between September and October 2025, questioning how the funds were utilised.
He said the money could have been deployed to address some of the community’s infrastructure challenges, particularly the flooding and poor road condition.
According to him, “Ogidi has been overtaken by flood for over 25 years.”
Orji further criticised what he described as the community’s decision to support political activities instead of using the funds to tackle its pressing developmental challenges.
He said the recurring flooding had continued to expose residents to hardship and damage property.
