Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has apologised to Nigerians following his side’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Prompt News Online reports.
The 10-time African champions were eliminated in the quarter-finals after suffering defeat to the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon.
Nigeria’s disappointment was compounded by a 2-1 loss to their arch-rivals, which also ended their hopes of securing a place in the inter-confederation playoffs for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The result means the Super Falcons will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament’s inception in 1991.
Madugu admitted that the outcome was difficult to accept, insisting that his players gave their best throughout the competition but ultimately fell short of expectations.
The tactician also took full responsibility for the team’s poor showing at the tournament and apologised to Nigerians for their failure to achieve their objectives.
He acknowledged the disappointment caused by the team’s early exit and expressed regret that the Super Falcons were unable to deliver the results expected of them.
“First of all, I have to apologise to Nigerians over our inability to make it to the World Cup. It was not our intention. We came and did the best that we could, but our best was not good enough. We are very sorry for that, and we take full responsibility for everything that happened,” Madugu said during his interaction with the media.
