A 40 year old commercial bus driver, Kabiru Olajide, has been remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre after being arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly stabbing a husband and wife during a disagreement over an unpaid N75,000 drinks bill.
Olajide is facing a five count charge bordering on assault causing bodily harm, malicious damage, theft and conduct likely to breach public peace. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on May 10, 2026, at a bar located on Olamide Igiaba Street, Oribanwa Phase 2, Ibeju Lekki, owned by Chimezie Okpoechi and his wife, Kate.
Police alleged that the defendant and several accomplices, who are still at large, organised a birthday celebration at the bar where they consumed drinks worth N75,000. Trouble reportedly began when the bar owners requested payment for the beverages.
Rather than settle the bill, the prosecution alleged that Olajide and the other suspects attacked the couple. Olajide was specifically accused of using a broken bottle to stab the husband and wife, leaving them with varying degrees of injuries.
The police further alleged that the suspects vandalised property within the premises, including the windscreen of a Toyota RAV4, with the total value of the damaged items estimated at about N5 million before fleeing the scene.
The case was said to have been reported to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, following a petition. A special investigative team was subsequently directed to investigate the matter and track down those responsible.
Investigators later arrested Olajide at his hideout in Ibeju Lekki through intelligence gathering and surveillance operations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Prosecuting counsel, Superintendent of Police Reuben Solomon, told the court that the offences allegedly committed by the defendant and his accomplices are punishable under relevant provisions of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Magistrate T.O. Abayomi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like amount.

However, the court ordered that he be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.
The matter was adjourned until July 17, 2026, for further hearing.
