A Magistrate’s Court in Akure has ordered the arrest of a father of three, Mr. Daniel Atilo, for allegedly defying a court order on the welfare and education of his children.
Atilo, a security guard with a new generation bank, was arrested within the court premises by police officers after a bench warrant was issued against him on May 8, 2025.
He was accused of failing to pay his children’s school fees and repeatedly shunning court appearances.
The defendant had earlier told the court that he would never give money to his estranged wife for the children’s upkeep, claiming the “gods of his land” would punish him over allegations of her infidelity.
Appearing before Magistrate Grace Alphonso, Atilo said he had been paying ₦35,000 monthly for upkeep between May and July but could not afford school fees on his ₦50,000 salary.
His estranged wife, however, told the court that he had not contributed to the children’s education since 2023 and was unaware of their academic progress, including their first child’s recent university admission.
Magistrate Alphonso condemned Atilo’s conduct, describing it as “a clear case of irresponsibility and disregard for lawful orders.” She ordered his immediate detention and directed the prosecutor to file contempt charges.
