A coalition of 100 civil society groups under the Civic Room for Rule of Law has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately remove the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), citing a disregard for presidential directives and the rule of law.
In a statement signed by its president, Maxwell Egboh, the coalition backed human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), who had earlier urged the federal government to dismiss Ibas.
According to the group, Ibas has made appointments and dismissed officials chosen by Governor Siminalayi Fubara without proper legal authority.
“This blatant disregard for the President’s orders shows the Sole Administrator’s contempt for the rule of law,” the statement read. The coalition described Ibas’ actions as unconstitutional and warned they pose a threat to peace and democratic governance in the state.
They further argued that Ibas’ conduct not only deepens the controversy surrounding his appointment but also undermines democratic institutions.
“Rivers people deserve leadership that respects the law, not one imposed without due process,” the group said.
The coalition urged President Tinubu to act swiftly, warning that continued inaction could escalate tensions in the state.
President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, in response to a political crisis that began in September 2023.
The tension stems from a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, now FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Ibas’ appointment as Sole Administrator has sparked widespread criticism, with legal experts and rights activists questioning its legality given that Rivers State still has an elected governor in office.
