As preparations begin for the 2027 general elections, Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to return to the PDP to strengthen his prospects in the next presidential race.
Sowunmi, who previously served as spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s campaign, made the appeal during an interview on Seun Okinbaloye’s Mic On podcast on Saturday.
“The PDP will open its nomination process for 2027.
Anyone interested should step forward,” Sowunmi said. “If I were Peter Obi, I’d return to the PDP and make a strong case for the presidential ticket.
This party was conceived in the bedroom of the late Alex Ekwueme.
I don’t see why the Igbo, along with southern leaders and other key figures in the PDP, can’t rally around him.”
He noted that Obi, who secured over six million votes in 2023 without major political backing, could perform even better with the support of an established party structure.
“If his energy and support base moved with him into the PDP and he clinched the presidential ticket, I believe he would win the South-East, South-South, Christian North, and North Central,” he added.
Sowunmi emphasized that his remarks were speculative and not based on any ongoing discussions between Obi and the PDP.
