The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Friday in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the occasion, urging citizens to use the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the values exemplified by the Prophet, particularly compassion, humility and service to humanity.

Tunji-Ojo said the occasion should encourage Nigerians to embrace values capable of strengthening peaceful coexistence and national unity.

He urged Nigerians to pray for peace, progress and greater cohesion across the country, stressing that the responsibility of preserving national unity rested on all citizens.

The minister also appealed to Muslims and other Nigerians celebrating the occasion to do so peacefully and responsibly, while extending his wishes for a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid.
