Chief Bode George, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has voiced deep disappointment over the defection of key party figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark—to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Although Atiku has yet to formally announce his exit from the PDP, he has been instrumental in leading a coalition of opposition politicians that recently adopted the ADC as its platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In contrast, David Mark has officially resigned from the PDP and now serves as the interim national chairman of the ADC.
Other notable PDP stalwarts, including former governors Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Emeka Ihedioha (Imo), have also joined the ADC, citing the party’s protracted internal crisis.
Reacting to the wave of defections during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Chief George expressed sorrow over what he described as the abandonment of the PDP by some of its founding fathers.
“I feel really heartbroken and saddened,” he said. “The PDP was once the political Iroko tree in Nigeria. Yes, we have a crisis, but many of those now leaving were also part of the problem. Instead of abandoning ship, we should fix it.”
He questioned the motives behind the defections, suggesting they were driven more by personal ambition than by genuine concern for party unity.
“Is it that the PDP has truly collapsed, or is this driven by self-interest and ambition? What exactly is motivating this shift?” George asked. “Some of them chose to leave just a day after a reconciliation meeting.
As a retired general, I’ve thought hard about it—and my conclusion is simple: it’s nothing but existential imbecility.”
George also downplayed suggestions that the ADC could become a major opposition force, arguing that the party lacks the structure and political depth of the PDP.
“The PDP has its issues, but we remain a formidable opposition.
