Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, declaring support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
The move was officially announced on Thursday at the National Assembly, Abuja, where he was received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside other top APC stakeholders from the North-East. Abba, widely known simply as “Abba,” described the decision as personal, strategic and driven by conviction rather than sentiment.
Speaking during the reception, he confirmed his resignation from the PDP and directed members and coordinators of his political structure, the Haske Atiku Organisation formed in 2022, to immediately collapse into the APC and work for the advancement of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. According to him, the country needed continuity and stability, which he believed the APC could deliver.
He said he joined the party in recognition of what he called the exemplary leadership of Senator Barau Jibrin and President Tinubu’s policy direction.
Abba added that his full energy going forward would be deployed towards ensuring Tinubu’s second-term victory.
Welcoming him, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, described the development as a defining moment that symbolised the emergence of what he termed “borderless politics.”
He said the younger Abubakar’s decision showed a shift toward ideology-based politics rather than old rivalry.
Deputy Senate President Barau praised Abba for what he called a bold and principled choice, noting that his defection was driven by personal conviction and belief in the current administration rather than familial ties.
Barau added that Abba had closely monitored reforms from abroad and returned home impressed with the government’s direction.
A presidential aide, Mahmoud Abdullahi, also assured Abba of full acceptance within the APC, saying the party recognised both his potential and the value of mobilising young Nigerians.
Abdullahi described the defector as “returning home” and encouraged him to take up a frontline role in securing Tinubu’s mandate.

The event rounded off with the formal renaming of his political group from Haske Atiku Organisation to Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, marking a complete break from his father’s camp and aligning his political future with the ruling party ahead of 2027.
