Less than three weeks to the start of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Morocco 2024, Spain-born head coach of Morocco’s senior women’s football team, the Atlas Lionesses
Jorge Vilda Rodriguez has unequivocally stated that African football has immense potential to compare with the best anywhere in the world.

Vilda, who guided Spain’s senior women’s team to win the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time-ever, said this much in a recent interview he granted to CAFOnline.com He argued that he has seen real progress in women’s football in Africa since he arrived the continent nearly two years ago.

According to the gaffer: “African football has immense potential. We have been working here in Morocco for almost two years and we have been playing against African teams. We are seeing real progress”.

Speaking further Vilda said: “Everything is more and more balanced. The teams are preparing better, the national competitions are improving, the teams have better technical staff who help them to progress. We see more organized teams and, above all, with enormous physical potential.

“There are also many players playing in the best leagues in the world, which clearly makes the difference, both for club and country.”

Also, the World Cup-winning coach who was hired in November 2023 by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) to manage the Atlas Lionesses spoke on a wide range of issues including his experience on the transition from coaching Europeans to African talents; impressions on WAFCON 2024 Group A where Morocco will compete against Zambia, Senegal and DR Congo, and his message to Moroccan fans.

“We are not going to disappoint them, (Morocans). We want them to come and support us in the stadiums, to follow us on television as well.

“What I can guarantee 100% is that our players will give everything, fight for every ball, not just to win games, but for every action. That’s the identity of this Moroccan team, and I can assure you that you’ll see that. We want Moroccans to be proud of their team, that’s why we work every day, “Vilda assured in the current CAFOnline.com interview.
