The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old driver, Ayoade Idowu, following the death of a Vehicle Inspection Office officer, Adediji Sesan, who was allegedly knocked down by a vehicle during a routine inspection in Akure.

Sesan, 35, reportedly sustained fatal head injuries after the driver of a Mitsubishi van allegedly drove off while the officer was checking the vehicle’s documents along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, Akure.

The incident occurred around 9:30 am on Friday, October 9, 2026, while the deceased was on routine patrol with his colleagues.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed the development in a statement, saying the officer had stopped the white Mitsubishi van, with registration number AGL 992 XX, for a document check.

According to the police, the driver initially stopped but allegedly drove away when asked to present the vehicle’s particulars, hitting Sesan in the process.

The injured officer was rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital, where a doctor on duty confirmed him dead.

His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Jimoh said the suspect, who resides on Gbogi Street, Akure, had been arrested and detained, while detectives had visited the scene as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He added that the case would be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues and associates over the loss.
