The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a landlord following the death of a 23-year-old nursing student, whose lifeless body was discovered in her apartment in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.
The deceased, Chiamaka Chilaka, a National Diploma II student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, was found dead at her residence in the Uruezeani area of the community on Sunday.
Chilaka, an indigene of Isingu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, was reportedly discovered unresponsive shortly after a church service, throwing residents and fellow students into mourning.
The incident drew public attention after a video surfaced online showing a cleric lamenting the student’s death.
There were also allegations that the deceased had repeatedly rejected advances from her landlord and was allegedly involved in a dispute with him shortly before her death.
Confirming the development on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the landlord had been taken into custody while investigations continued.
Ikenga disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, ordered an intensive investigation into the case after it was transferred from the Nnobi Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka.
According to him, detectives who visited the scene observed signs of violence on the victim’s body, including a deep cut on her thigh and other injuries, raising suspicions of foul play.
He said the police command was committed to conducting a thorough and discreet investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The police spokesperson added that the remains of the deceased had been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
He assured residents that anyone found responsible for the death would be prosecuted, while urging members of the public with useful information to come forward and assist investigators.
