Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has spoken about the challenges she faced while transitioning from R&B music to Afrobeats after relocating to Nigeria in 2012.

Inspired by the rapid growth of the Nigerian music industry, the singer returned to the country after building part of her career abroad, where she worked as a backup vocalist for international stars including George Michael and Mary J. Blige.

Following her return, Savage signed with Mavin Records, where she began exploring a different sound.

Speaking in a recent interview with TVC, the ‘Kele Kele Love’ crooner credited music producer Don Jazzy for helping her successfully adapt to Afrobeats.

“It was difficult for me to transition from R&B to street sounds. But when I was at Mavin Records, Don Jazzy opened my mind to so many different things. He made me believe that talent was not limited, that I could do anything if I really focused on it,” she said.

“He took me out of that R&B bubble and introduced me to other sounds,” she added.

Prompt News reports the singer also stated that she has no regrets about returning to Nigeria and embracing Afrobeats, a move that eventually helped shape her career as one of the leading female voices in the genre.
