Mrs. Mariam AbdulLateef has approached an Ilorin Area Court, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to Mr. AbdulLateef Tahjudeen over claims of prolonged sexual neglect.
Mariam, a resident of No. 144 Cemetery Road, Irewolede Area, Ilorin, told the court she married Tahjudeen in 2016 under Islamic law, and the union produced a seven-year-old daughter.
However, she lamented that her husband stopped fulfilling his marital obligations after the birth of their child and has since abandoned the matrimonial bed.
“He doesn’t sleep in the same room with me or touch me. Whenever I seek his attention, he tells me to leave his house if I am tired of the marriage,” she said.
Mariam urged the court to dissolve the marriage, stating that her husband’s neglect and accusations of infidelity were taking a toll on her mental health.
“My husband has been tormenting me with baseless allegations of having extramarital affairs, yet he refuses to touch me. This is affecting my peace of mind,” she said.
In his defense, Tahjudeen admitted to facing health challenges that have hindered his ability to fulfill his marital duties. He, however, expressed a strong desire to reconcile with his wife, emphasizing his love and appreciation for her patience.
The presiding judge, Mr. Hammad Ajumonbi, acknowledged the significance of intimacy in marriage and stressed that neglect of either party’s needs should not be taken lightly.
He encouraged both parties to seek an amicable resolution and urged Mariam to exercise more patience. The judge then adjourned the case to February 20 for a report on the settlement efforts.
