Veteran Nigerian singer Daddy Showkey has explained why he is celebrating 50 years in the entertainment industry even though he is only 56 years old.
The music star recently unveiled plans for a week-long celebration to commemorate the milestone, which coincides with his 56th birthday on August 4. The activities will kick off with a concert in Ajegunle on August 8 before concluding with a grand finale at Eko Hotel and Suites on August 9.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV, Daddy Showkey said his career began at the age of six, long before he ventured into music, noting that he first made his mark as a child entertainer.
“I started appearing on television in 1976. I was on Bar Beach Show, then I went on to feature in other shows, and I was just six years old. It surprises me when people ask how old I am because I’m celebrating 50 years on stage,” he said.
The singer explained that the anniversary reflects his entire journey in entertainment, stressing that his career started as an acrobat before he appeared on television and later acted in productions such as Village Headmaster.
“I will only encourage parents to discover their children’s talents and document their journey. I started as an acrobat. I’m not just celebrating Daddy Showkey the musician, but Daddy Showkey as an entertainer.
“Some of the people who discovered me back then are still alive. I was part of ‘Village Headmaster’. It was Adejumo Lewis who discovered me in Ajegunle. I started when I was six, and I’ll be 56 soon. I call myself a child star, and I appreciate my mother for that.”
