Many parents hold the belief that sending their child to a missionary school will help shape the child’s behaviour for the better.
This belief can be described as a positive mindset, after all, no loving parent would intentionally send their child to a school with poor moral standards.
Choosing a school known for discipline and values is commendable.
However, it’s important for parents to understand that a missionary school cannot magically change a child who has been poorly raised and is still living under the same negative influences at home.
Such schools can only sustain good morals that have already been instilled at home, not create them from scratch.
Why do parents think otherwise? Often, it’s because of their busy schedules and inability to closely monitor their children. They hope that the school will take over their role in guiding and correcting their child’s behaviour.
But the Scriptures ask, “If the foundation is destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Indeed, there is always room for change. But how can a child who constantly imitates the poor habits of their parents change while still being nurtured by the same environment? It’s unlikely.
Some parents fail to discipline their children, excusing bad behaviour as love. But love without correction is not love, it is neglect disguised as affection.
When a poorly raised child is placed in a missionary school, he may conform outwardly to the school’s standards to avoid punishment.
In school, he behaves properly and follows rules. But once back home, without consistent reinforcement, he reverts to his old ways.
To such a child, the school becomes a place of punishment rather than a source of guidance. This is because the child is not receiving the same message of discipline and moral consistency at home.
In such cases, the school’s influence is limited. There is only so much the school can do when the foundation is weak.
Let charity begin at home. Plant the right values early in your child’s life, and the school will help nurture and sustain those seeds of good character.
