Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has declared that Nigeria’s 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign truly begins now after his side battled through a difficult group stage, Prompt News Online reports.
The 10-time African champions recovered from an opening-day defeat to tournament debutants Malawi to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
Nigeria eventually finished second in Group C behind Malawi after the two sides, along with Zambia, all ended the group stage on six points, with goal difference separating them.
“We put ourselves in a very difficult position, but thank God we managed to get out of it,” Madugu said after the Super Falcons thrashed Egypt 6-2 in their final group match to book their place in the last eight.
“The competition is just starting for us.”
Nigeria will face Cameroon on Sunday in a quarter-final clash, with a place in the semi-finals—and an automatic qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil—at stake.
Describing the encounter as a decisive test, Madugu insisted his team would approach it with maximum focus.
“It’s a final for us. We won’t take it for granted,” he said.
