The late Funmi Odusina who drowned in the Elegushi Beach last Saturday at the Island was said to have died trying to rescue one of her bosom friends, her aunt, Bukola Odunsi disclosed to newsmen.
Miss Odunsi, the deceased aunt who spoke with newsmen on Wednesday, narrated the circumstances that led to her cousin’s early death.
According to her, “On that fateful day my parents and I were at home when we received a phone call from her boss that someone called him from Island General Hospital that she was rushed to the emergency unit of the hospital.
“Immediately my elder sister received the call, she in turn called someone at her Hostel in Unilag who later confirmed the incident; that was how we dashed to the hospital only to be told that she had died and they deposited her remains in the hospital mortuary.”
Bukola added that the management of the hospital allowed them to see her remains in the mortuary.
Bursting into tears, the lady described the death as ‘painful’.
Her words: “Since the incident, our parents have not been stable because the deceased is a brilliant student. She graduated from Covenant University two years ago with a good grade. We are going to missed her so much.”
When newsmen visited the faculty of law, some of their colleagues were seen wearing black attire mourning their loved ones.
One of her colleagues who pleaded anonymity said, “We were supposed to writing our post-graduate examination, but they are no more.
“As you can see we are wearing black clothes to mourn the death of our colleagues, we were supposed to be writing our exams together but unfortunately, they are not with us. We are bereaved and we are short of words.”
Another student who simply identified herself as Gbemi said, “I was supposed to go with them to the Beach for the celebration, but because of the examination, I decided to stay back.
“We are mourning them, because whatever that happened to our colleagues happened to every one of us that is why you see us putting on black attire to mourn them. We persuaded the management to postpone the exam and they refused. We wouldn’t have written the exam if the management had succumbed to our demand.
“This is the only way we can show them our final respect. We missed them and their death was a great loss to us and their family members.”
