UN Women says its has begun a three-day training exercise for 90 journalists, women and community leaders to promote women participation in security and peace building process in Adamawa.
The Programme Manager, Mrs Olubukola Adelehin said this at the inauguration of the exercise on Wednesday in Yola.
She said the exercise was designed to strengthen capacity of the participants on the imperative of peace and security and gender mainstreaming ahead of the 2023 General Elections.
She said the media has been actively engaged in the project towards creating awareness among the people to facilitate successful the implementation of the programme.
“We have established platform called women peace and security media network with the support from the Norwegian Government for successful implementation of the programme.
“We trained hundreds of women mentors as mediators on conflict resolutions at community level,” she said.
According to her, the objective is to contribute towards facilitating a more peaceful, secured and gender equal country, adding that the Agency was committed to the implementation of the Adamawa Action Plan in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
In her remarks, Mrs Soso Benson, Permanent Secretary, Adamawa State Mministry of Women Affairs, described the exercise as timely, especially considering the roles of women in child development.
She said the state government had initiated viable empowerment programmes aimed at improving social and economic status of women, and reitrated commitment towards enhancing girl-child education.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that UN women has been implementing various projects to encourage women participation in development, security and peace programmes in the state since 2018. (NAN)
