Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a suspected foreign operative believed to be linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) during ongoing counter insurgency operations in Borno State.
The suspect was apprehended after security forces successfully repelled an attempted attack by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area.
According to security reports, troops pursued the fleeing insurgents after the failed assault, leading to the recovery of several operational items abandoned along their escape routes.
Among the items recovered were high frequency handheld radios and other communication devices believed to have been used by the terrorist group.
The recovered equipment reportedly provided valuable intelligence, prompting the military to expand operations to parts of the Lake Chad Islands and Abadam Local Government Area.
During the extended operation, troops arrested a suspect believed to be an Arab of Moroccan origin who is alleged to have connections with ISIS.
Security sources disclosed that the suspect had earlier been identified during a forensic review of video footage retrieved from a camcorder allegedly belonging to a terrorist cameraman killed during the failed Cross Kauwa attack.
Investigators believe the footage and other intelligence gathered played a significant role in tracking the suspect.
Following his arrest, the suspect was airlifted by a Nigerian Air Force helicopter to a secure military facility, where he is currently undergoing interrogation.
