Popular Nigerian actor Timini Egbuson has revealed that a significant setback early in his career turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to him.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Culture League podcast, the Shuga Naija star shared how he came close to representing Nigeria on Big Brother Africa, only to be dropped at the very last stage of the selection process.
“I was supposed to be on Big Brother Africa some years ago. It was about five of us, we’d done all the necessary things and they asked us to pack our bags and wait to be called to join the show,” he said. “I even hired someone to manage my social media, but they didn’t pick me. I think Tayo went, I’m not sure who went that year.”

Despite his disappointment at the time, Timini now sees that moment as a turning point that led him down the right path.
“I have learnt that sometimes, lost opportunities could be a blessing,” he said. “I have so many colleagues that have gotten opportunities that I wanted. I’ve gotten opportunities that people wanted as well.”
According to the actor, his rejection from Big Brother Africa made room for a more defining opportunity — a role in MTV Shuga Naija, the series he credits with launching his acting career.
“But that was the year that I did MTV Shuga, and MTV Shuga is what launched my career to who I am today,” he explained. “If I had gone on Big Brother, the hype would have gone down by now, or I might not have made it in the entertainment industry.”
Timini also shared a broader message about trusting the journey and accepting life’s detours.
“But when I look at the trajectory of my career, some of those things that I might have gotten would have completely derailed me from where I am today. And I believe that where I am today is where I am ordained by God to be,” he added.
“So, sometimes, when you lose opportunities, you just have to count it as a blessing, dust your feet and keep on moving. That’s one hard lesson I have learnt.”
The actor’s story has since inspired fans and creatives alike, serving as a reminder that rejection is not the end, but sometimes a redirection toward something greater.
