Egypt captain Mohamed Salah has expressed his hope that the Pharaohs can continue making history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after securing a landmark victory over New Zealand, Prompt News Online reports.
Egypt defeated the All Whites 3-1 at BC Place in Vancouver to record their first-ever FIFA World Cup win, ending a wait that stretched 92 years and 25 days since their tournament debut.
New Zealand made the brighter start and took a deserved lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman powered home a header from a corner.
The Pharaohs responded strongly after the break, with Zico heading in the equaliser two minutes before the hour mark.
Hossam Hassan’s men then completed the turnaround through Salah, who calmly slotted home a low finish following an excellent team move.
Substitute Trezeguet sealed the victory with Egypt’s third goal eight minutes from time, ensuring a memorable night for the African giants as they celebrated a historic World Cup triumph.
Salah expressed delight after Egypt finally ended their long wait for a World Cup victory, calling it a great achievement.”It’s incredible. I don’t know how to express it in words,” Salah told FIFA.com after the thrilling contest.
” It’s a great achievement for all the players, for the staff, so hopefully we can carry on like this in the group, and we can write history and qualify – and in years to come it will be remembered as one the best achievements in the history [of Egyptian football]. We have to enjoy today, enjoy tomorrow, then focus on the next game.”
Egypt lead Group G with four points from two matches ahead of their final group game against Iran.
