The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the alleged assault of a retired Chief Superintendent of Police by a serving inspector, following a report published by Vanguard.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed on Tuesday that both the retired officer and the inspector involved had been invited and interviewed at the command headquarters on Monday.
According to Abimbola, the Commissioner of Police has directed the Monitoring Unit to conduct a comprehensive and impartial inquiry into the allegation, noting that the command is committed to establishing the facts surrounding the incident.
She said the inspector denied assaulting the retired officer, claiming he had no prior relationship with him and only encountered him on the day in question.
The inspector further alleged that the retired CSP was driving against traffic, an assertion strongly disputed by the complainant.
“At the moment, it is one person’s account against the other, as there are no witnesses. However, investigations are ongoing and we intend to get to the root of the matter,” Abimbola said.
The police spokesperson also debunked reports suggesting that the inspector had not been invited for questioning or that he was boasting of being untouchable, stressing that the officer had been identified and questioned by the command.
On claims that the retired CSP had been restricted from driving, Abimbola said there was no such order from the police.
“He is not restricted from driving, and his vehicle is with him. Any decision not to drive is purely personal,” she added.
