The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed an attack on Kankara General Hospital, which resulted in the injury of a doctor and another health worker, while three individuals were abducted.
In a statement, Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar condemned the assault, calling it senseless and unacceptable. He emphasized that healthcare workers, who are essential to society, should never be targeted in such attacks.
According to police spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq, the assailants stormed the hospital premises on Tuesday, January 14, armed with AK-47 rifles, and opened fire to cause panic. During the attack, Dr. Murtala Saleh was shot in the thigh, and another individual, Kamala Suleiman, was wounded in the knee. Both victims are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
In addition to the injuries, the gunmen abducted three individuals. Despite a gunfight between the assailants and security forces, the bandits managed to escape with the captives.
The police assured the public that efforts are underway to locate and rescue the abducted individuals and apprehend the criminals involved.
The Commissioner of Police urged citizens to remain calm and continue their daily activities, while reiterating the commitment of security agencies to protect lives and property in the state.
