The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 37-year-old cleric, Asonye Isaiah, over the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in Karshi, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The arrest was confirmed on Sunday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, who disclosed that the suspect was apprehended following a complaint lodged at the Karshi Police Division on April 18, 2026.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the cleric allegedly deceived the victim’s aunt by claiming the teenager was under spiritual attack and required cleansing at a river.
However, he reportedly took the girl to a hotel in New Karshi, where the offence was said to have occurred.
Police further alleged that the suspect threatened the victim to prevent her from speaking out.
The case came to light after the victim’s guardian noticed behavioural changes and raised concerns, prompting the disclosure and subsequent report to authorities.
Medical examination later corroborated the allegation, police said.
Nansel added that the suspect admitted to the act during interrogation.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for thorough investigation and prosecution.
