            By Adeboye Ado, Akure

The Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) says the state government had invested a huge sum of N22 billion in the basic education sector in the last six and a half years in the state.

The Chairman of the SUBEB, Mr Victor Olabimtan, stated this in a statement on Thursday to mark 2023 World Teachers’ Day in Akure.

The theme for the 2023 edition is: “The Teacher We Need For The Education We Want: The global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage.”

Olabimtan explained that the money was expended on infrastructural development in the areas of renovation, reconstruction and construction of over 900 school buildings, fencing, provisions of bore-holes, laboratories, e -learning facilities and distribution of instructional materials to mention but a few.

The chairman commended the state government for the huge investment and appealed to teachers to be good examples to students under them in conduct and actions in and out of school environment in order to be a good role model.

He said that the SUBEB in conjunction with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) had trained and retrained teachers with some of them going overseas to up scale their skills in order to deliver efficiently and effectively on the new curricular.

Olabimtan, a former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, called on teachers not to lose hope as the state government would continue to prioritize their welfare and conditions of service.

He informed teachers and educators in the state that the government had approved their careers tenure elongation to 65 years or 40 years in service, depending on which that would come first.

The chairman admonished teachers to continue to deliver on their mandate, considering government’s huge investment in the sector, promising that the board was already working on the need for the recruitment of additional teachers to fill up critical vacancies in public schools.

He stated that the focus of the state government under the leadership of Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was to continue to recruit qualified teachers to fill identified critical shortages in public schools.

The SUBEB Chairman said teachers are special breeds of people that must be accorded their rightful positions in the scheme of things in the society as it used to be in those days.

He arguably stated that teachers should be the most adored and respected members of every community next to the traditional rulers as it used to be in the past. READ ALSO:

The World Teachers’ Day, formerly known as International Teachers’ Day, was declared by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Oct. 5 , 1994 to pay tribute to the educators who played a pivotal role in the shaping of future of the world society.
