A motorcyclist and phone-charging operator, identified simply as Mohammed, has died after suspected robbers attacked him with a machete and severed one of his ears in the Baiyeku area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Mohammed reportedly died on Monday after sustaining severe injuries during the attack, which occurred on Sunday evening when the assailants allegedly stormed his shop in an attempt to rob him.
Residents said the suspects had allegedly carried out criminal activities in another part of the community before moving to Mohammed’s shop, where he also provided phone-charging services.
A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident, said the victim was rushed to a hospital after the attack but later died.
“Mohammed used to charge phones for people. On the night of the incident, the robbers entered his shop and attempted to rob him. They attacked him with a machete and cut off his ear in the process.
“He was taken to the hospital, but we learnt that he died this morning,” the source said.
The source added that other people were reportedly attacked in another part of the community where the suspects had allegedly operated before arriving at Mohammed’s shop.
A police source confirmed that the incident had been reported at a station and that an investigation was underway.
The source, however, said investigators were examining a possible link between the attack and a cult-related incident reported in the area on the same evening.
“The incident was reported at our station, and we are aware of it. Although we suspect it was carried out by cultists because of a cult-related incident in the area that same evening, which we are still investigating, we are looking into the matter,” the source said.
When contacted for comments on Monday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said she was not aware of the incident but promised to respond after making inquiries.
