A fire outbreak in the early hours of Sunday destroyed parts of a residential building at Tewo-Gbore Street, Ogele Ori-Sunbare in the Eyenkorin area of Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The incident, which occurred around 12:38 a.m., affected a room-and-parlour self-contained apartment as well as a two-bedroom flat within the building.
The spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that firefighters swiftly responded to a distress call from residents of the area.
According to him, the prompt intervention of emergency responders helped contain the inferno and prevented it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.
Adekunle explained that preliminary findings revealed that the fire was triggered by improperly extinguished charcoal stored close to the residential structure.
He stated that sacks of charcoal had recently been offloaded at the location, adding that some of the contents still retained heat which later reignited after exposure to air.
“The residual heat from the charcoal reignited and escalated into a fire outbreak that spread to the building,” he said.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, cautioned charcoal dealers, transporters and residents against unsafe handling and storage of combustible materials.
He urged members of the public to avoid keeping flammable items near residential buildings and advised residents to promptly alert emergency agencies whenever fire incidents occur.
