The Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Senator Nenadi Usman, has dismissed concerns over recent defections from the party, insisting that the LP remains strong, united, and committed to offering a viable alternative to the current administration.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday in Kaduna, Usman described the ongoing wave of defections as neither surprising nor damaging to the party’s structure.
She said the Labour Party was focused on restoring national dignity and delivering people-oriented governance, in contrast to what she termed the “rudderless and visionless” leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The APC has failed Nigerians.
The suffering of our people has never been this widespread or this severe,” Usman stated.
Reacting to the defection of some LP members to the APC, she described such actions as both “morally indefensible and legally questionable,” particularly in cases where defectors were elected on the LP platform.
“It is disheartening to see people jump ship after securing victory on one party’s platform, only to defect for selfish gain,” she said.
Despite the departures, Usman affirmed that the Labour Party remains unshaken and continues to enjoy the support of the Nigerian people.
She noted that some of the defectors never genuinely aligned with the party’s vision, and their exit had, in fact, helped strengthen internal cohesion.
“We made some mistakes in candidate selection, but those lessons have been learned,” she admitted. “Going forward, we will be more deliberate in choosing candidates who truly share our mission to build a new Nigeria.”
Usman also appealed to aggrieved members to reconcile their differences and rejoin efforts to reposition the party ahead of future elections.

She announced that the LP would soon commence a nationwide membership revalidation exercise, alongside congresses and a national convention, all endorsed by the party’s National Executive Council.
