Emerging reports indicate that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, may step down from her position, but only if the process follows due legislative procedures and takes place during a plenary session.

As reported by Vanguard, the Assembly had been indefinitely adjourned on February 17 after 36 out of 40 lawmakers expressed support for Meranda’s leadership.

However, following interventions from top figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), an arrangement was reportedly reached for her to resign, allowing Lagos West to produce the next Speaker.

According to sources, Meranda has agreed to step down but insists that it must happen during plenary.

“If she is to resign, it must follow the proper legislative process and be done in plenary,” a source stated. “Until the House reconvenes, no final decision can be made.”

There are also indications that she might return to her former role as Deputy Speaker after resigning.

APC Leaders Work to Resolve Crisis

In an effort to restore peace within the Assembly, senior APC leaders, including former National Chairman Bisi Akande, ex-Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Board Chairman Pius Akinyelure, have intervened.

Delegates from the party’s national leadership in Abuja have been engaging with key Assembly members to find a resolution. Initial meetings were held over the weekend, with further discussions expected soon.
