Jonathan Restates Commitment To Welfare Of Military Personnel

President Goodluck Jonathan has again reiterated the commitment of his administration to the well-being of the country’s armed forces personnel.

The President gave the assurance while speaking at this year’s Army Day Celebration in Abuja. He also pledged continued support in the area of equipments so that they can be able to discharge their constitutional role of defending the country.

“I want to assure you of my government commitment to your well being. We will continue to support you and meet your needs.

“This administration will continue to effect suitable initiatives aimed at repositioning our security agencies to deal with contemporary security challenges especially the provision of adequate equipment and regular training and capacity building.

“We have a well organized force that is contributing immensely to national and international peace and security and with the rising profile of our outstanding professionalism.

“We are particularly delighted to note that since 1999, the Army and its sister services, the navy, the air force have remained highly professional services under democratic control, discharging their constitutional roles”

“They have remained focused on ensuring peace, promoting unity and defending our sovereignty. We really do appreciate their sacrifice and contribution to the development of our fatherland.

“I commend the Nigerian armed forces and our entire security services for their patriotism, dedication, sacrifice and continued engagement to maintain peace and security across our country and other parts of the world, especially our dear continent, Africa”, he said.

President Jonathan also reminded the security personnel involve in enforcing emergency rule in three north-eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, to be conscious of rules of engagement and respect for human rights.

“The current stabilizing phase of your operations, the welfare and well-being of the people and communities where you live and work must be your primary focus. You must at all times defend our citizens and foreigners alike against all terrorist enemies

” I also urge you to continue strengthening your collaborations and synergy with other security agencies in our country as well as with friendly partner institutes in order to enhance your efforts and effectiveness.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt General Azubuike Ihejirika assured the President of continued loyalty of officers and soldiers to constituted authorities.

He told the President that in line with the effort to transform the army, a department of military/civilian affairs has been established to help create awareness and smoothen relationship between the army and civilian the populace.

The celebration was attended by the Minister of State for Defence, Olusola Obada, other ministers and top military personnel.
