A school pupil has been reported missing after flood swept through a section of the Nibo-Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22, 2026, following heavy rainfall in parts of the state.
Nine people, including seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued after they became trapped while travelling through the flooded route.
The rescue operation was carried out by the Anambra State Police Command’s Safe School Operatives in collaboration with members of the affected community.
The command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the operatives were mobilised to the scene after receiving information about the incident.
He said the rescuers succeeded in moving the seven pupils and two adults to safety, but one other child remained unaccounted for.
Ikenga said the police had consequently commenced a sustained search and rescue operation for the missing pupil, with community members and other relevant stakeholders joining the effort.
The statement read in part, “The Anambra State Police Command, through its Safe School Operatives, in collaboration with concerned members of the community, has rescued nine persons following a flood incident along the Nibo-Isiagu Road, Awka.
“However, one additional child involved in the incident is still unaccounted for.
The command has consequently activated sustained search and rescue operations in the affected area.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Ama, directed that the search be sustained and expanded until the missing child was found.
Ama also urged residents, particularly those living or operating around the affected route, to provide useful information that could assist the police and other emergency responders.
He advised parents, guardians, school authorities and motorists to exercise extreme caution when using flooded roads, bridges and waterways during heavy rainfall.

The CP specifically warned parents and guardians against allowing children to cross flooded or otherwise dangerous routes, adding that the command would continue to work with communities and relevant agencies under the Safe School Initiative to prevent avoidable loss of lives during emergencies.
