Nigerian comedian and actor Ayodeji Makun, popularly known as AY, has reflected on an old Instagram message he received from Afrobeats singer Asake years before the musician became an internationally recognised star.
AY shared the story on Instagram on Monday after attending Asake’s sold-out concert at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, during the singer’s “In God We Trust” tour.
Looking back at the singer’s journey, AY said he recently remembered that Asake had contacted him through Instagram in 2019, although he did not come across the message when it was initially sent.
“I remember when this boy sent me a message in my DM on Instagram. I didn’t even get to see this message on time. This was years ago, sometime during 2019,” he said.
Prompt News reports AY also showed the message in his video. Asake, who introduced himself as “Ololade”, had appealed to the comedian to listen to and support his music.
“Good Evening sir. I’m OLOLADE. How are you doing sir? I’m here for help, KING AY. I just drop a record titled – African Something. You vibing to the song is a lot to my career,” the message read.

The singer continued his appeal, writing, “KING AY, Help a son sir. May God bless you and your family. I love you KING AY.”
While sharing the throwback message, AY clarified that he was not attempting to claim responsibility for Asake’s achievements.
“I’m not saying all of this to take any credit. That glory belongs to God and his talent and of course the hard work that is put into all of this,” he said.
The comedian said watching Asake perform in front of a packed Houston venue made him reflect on the remarkable progress the singer has made since sending that message.
AY used the experience to encourage people to treat others with kindness, particularly those seeking opportunities, noting that nobody can predict how far someone’s journey may go.
“The truth is that the person asking to be seen today may become the person the whole world will celebrate tomorrow. So be good to people, respect their dreams, never look down on anyone because you simply cannot tell what tomorrow brings,” AY said.
Following the concert, AY said Asake’s management invited him backstage, where the singer personally came over to greet him.
He praised Asake’s humility despite his growing international profile and described his performance as exceptional.
“Ah Asake, you were simply phenomenal,” AY said.
Congratulating the singer, the comedian added, “Nigeria celebrates you, Africa celebrates you and the world is seeing all your doings and workings right now.”
