The Federal Road Safety Corps has commenced a three day special enforcement operation in Ondo State aimed at reducing road crashes and promoting safer driving across major highways.
The exercise, code named Operation Sanity, was flagged off on Monday in Akure by the Ondo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Dr Samuel Ibitoye.
Speaking during the inauguration, Ibitoye said the operation would focus on tackling the most common traffic violations identified through research as major contributors to road crashes in the state.
He explained that the enforcement drive would target offences including speeding, dangerous driving, overloading, tyre related violations, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to use seat belts, use of mobile phones while driving, route violations and vehicles emitting excessive smoke.
According to him, motorists found violating any of the listed offences will be arrested, fined and sanctioned in line with traffic regulations.
The sector commander noted that the operation would combine enforcement with public enlightenment to encourage motorists to adopt safer driving habits.
He warned against overloading, stressing that it not only endangers passengers but also damages road infrastructure and increases the likelihood of fatal crashes.
Ibitoye urged road users to remain patient, obey traffic rules and avoid distractions while driving, adding that road safety is a collective responsibility.
He said the objective of the operation is to significantly reduce crashes on highways in Ondo State and across the country.

The FRSC boss also appealed to motorists to drive responsibly and maintain positive attitudes on the road to ensure the safety of all road users.
