The immediate past national chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur has been suspended for one month, the party’s leadership announced on Thursday.
Also suspended is a member from Adamawa State, Aliyu Abuba Gurin, who filed a suit seeking the removal of the party’s national chairman, Adamu Mu’azu.
The decision to suspend the duo was taken at the 395th meeting of PDP National Working Committee held Wednesday, December 3, 2014.
Justifying the action, the party’s National Legal Adviser, Victor Kwon, in a statement said both Tukur and Gurin did not explore the existing internal mechanisms of seeking redress before heading to court.
Prompt News recalls that Gurin had apart from seeking the removal of the national chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, also prayed the court to stop the forthcoming national convention of the party.
On his part, Tukur had filed counter suit, seeking his reinstatement as the national chairman of the PDP, submitting that he was compelled to resign then.
The statement by Kwon suspending the duo reads in part, “The NWC reasoned that for instituting a claim and counter claim in suit FHC/ABJ /821/2014; Gurin vs PDP & 3 others without first exploring and exhausting the party’s internal mechanism of redress and for attempting to stop the forthcoming National Convention to nominate the party’s presidential candidate as well as regularize the position of the National Chairman and other members of the National Working Committee is unacceptable.
“The NWC hereby suspends Dr. Bamanga Tukur and Aliyu Abuba Gurin for one month and refers them to the National Disciplinary Committee for infringing on section 58(1)(a)( b)( h)( l) of the PDP Constitution 2012( as amended).”
