Manchester City moved level with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table after securing a controversial 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
City went into the derby three points behind Arsenal, who had earlier claimed a 1-0 win away at Sunderland on Saturday.
The visitors’ task became more difficult when they were reduced to 10 men after Phil Foden was shown a red card for kicking out at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Despite playing most of the match with a numerical disadvantage, City created the better chances and eventually found the breakthrough through Erling Haaland.
Haaland appeared to have his effort from Antoine Semenyo’s cross ruled out for offside by the assistant referee. However, following a lengthy VAR review, referee Michael Oliver was advised to overturn the decision and award the goal.
City held on for all three points to maintain their perfect start to the campaign.
The victory leaves Manchester City and Arsenal level on points after four matches, with City sitting top of the table on goal difference.
