Wife of Edo Governor, Mrs Betsy Obaseki, on Sunday, said that the free medical outreach programme organised by the state government was to appreciate the people of the state for their support at ensuring victory for the governor in 2020.
The governor’s wife stated this at a news conference in Benin City.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the news was aimed at announcing the commencement of free medical care for residents by the state government, in partnership with Association of Nigeria Physicians in the Americas (ANPA).
Obaseki said that the medical mission was also to thank the people of the state for their continued support to the governor who had taken their health as a priority.
She said that the list of indigent patients that required medical care had all been captured in the free medical mission.
The governor’s wife listed some of the services that residents would enjoy to include: cardiology, nephrology, ophthalmology and dental surgery, among others.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Obehi Akoria, said that 4,000 people had been screened, with 600 other requiring surgical intervention while 300 were ready for surgeries.
Akoria noted that 65 highly qualified specialists from ANPA were already in the state to team up with 200 volunteers, including clinical and non-clinical volunteers.
In his contribution, President of ANPA, Dr Christopher Okunseri, said that the association’s aim was to provide free medical care for the people in anticipation of a healthier Nigeria.
Okunseri commended Obaseki for initiating the collaboration, expressing his association’s readiness to deliver quality healthcare services to Edo people.
In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of Edo Specialist Hospital, Prof. Sunday Adeboye, said that all venues were set for the free medical mission.
Adeboye said that provisions had been made for people with chronic diseases who would need to continue their care and treatment after the end of the mission.
He noted that arrangements had been made to enroll such people into the State Health Insurance Scheme for easy access to quality care. (NAN)
