Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Center (HICC), Pastor Bolaji Idowu, has advised against entering romantic relationships while unemployed, stating that a lack of financial stability can cloud one’s judgment.
Speaking during a sermon, Pastor Idowu emphasized that joblessness limits an individual’s choices and can cause people to find relationships appealing for the wrong reasons.
“Don’t date when you are jobless. Some relationships seem attractive, not because they truly are, but because you have no money,” he said.
“When you start earning and become financially independent, you’ll realize that what kept you in that relationship was poverty—not love.”
He further explained that financial hardship can lead to poor decisions, comparing it to making a deal on an empty stomach.
“It wasn’t love-induced, it was hunger-induced. Never negotiate on a hungry stomach—you’ll get a bad deal.
That’s a crumbs mentality. When you’re poor, small things satisfy you easily, and you settle for less without knowing it,” he added.

Encouraging a mindset shift, Pastor Idowu urged individuals to think beyond survival and aim for abundance.
“You need to shift your thinking. I hear people say, ‘If I can just travel to America.’
How can traveling to America be your ultimate goal?” he questioned.
