Panic has spread across Ogoda community in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State following the discovery of the decomposing remains of an unidentified young woman in a nearby stream.
The woman was suspected to have been abducted and killed, while some parts of her body were allegedly missing.
The remains were reportedly recovered from the stream on Sunday by security personnel and the Chairman of Ahoada West LGA, Eugene Epelle, who visited the scene.
Speaking during the recovery operation, Epelle condemned the incident and vowed to ensure that those responsible were identified and prosecuted.
He said, “I condemn this act totally. I will make sure I get to the root of this matter. Anyone involved will go in for it. This matter will not end in just investigation. It will go to court for this lady to get justice.”
The council chairman urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that security measures would be strengthened across the local government area.
The Paramount Ruler of Ogoda, Chief Tom Obutu, said residents had been thrown into fear following the discovery.
Obutu alleged that a group of young men from a neighbouring community abducted the woman from Ahoada East, killed her and dumped her remains near the river after allegedly removing some body parts.
He said, “Some boys, about five in number, conspired and abducted a girl from Ahoada East to Ogoda community, after which the girl was killed.
“They removed her breast, private part and collected her heart, then went and dropped her in a stream very close to the village.”
The traditional ruler said he reported the incident to the police, after which security personnel and the council chairman visited the community and entered the swamp to recover the remains.
He appealed to security agencies to increase their presence in the area and protect residents from criminal activities.
The remains were subsequently deposited in a mortuary, while authorities had yet to establish the identity of the deceased as of the time of filing this report.
